The coming of The North Zealand of the Kings National Park

Skidendam. Photographer Lars GeilKongernes Nordsjælland (The North Zealand of the Kings) has been nominated as a future national park. The final establishment of the national park is expected to happen in this decade.

The nominated area covers some of Denmark's richest deciduous woodlands, including natural forests and swamp forests as well as the two largest lakes in Denmark; Esrum Sø (largest body of fresh water) and Arresø (largest surface area). Both lakes are surrounded by abundant and varied bird life.

The forest of Gribskov and Esrum Sø are embedded together in the North Zealand landscape as a natural core area. Together, the lake and the forest encompass an area with natural splendor and a potential for outdor activity that makes it unique in Denmark.

From historic times North Zealand has received special attention from the Danish kings, as witnessed by the palaces of Søborg, Gurre, Kronborg, Frederiksborg and Fredensborg, where several unique systems of pathways for hunting (riding to hounds) have been established.

The area already has a number of facilities for visitors. However, a national park will provide great opportunities for enhancing everbodys' understanding of nature, outdoor activities and knowledge – both for local inhabitants and for the more than a million people living in the Greater Copenhagen area, but also for the visitor.
