The coming Skjern Å national park

Skjern Å. Photographer Bert WiklundThe Skjern Å river has been nominated as a national park. Establishment is expected to start in autumn 2008.

Skjern Å has great national and international significance because of several rare and endangered animal and plant species, and the area covers the largest natural re-establishment project in Northern Europe. The Skjern Å area is characterised by the free dynamics of the riparian landscape, and the open heath landscape and heath bogs.

The river is home to the Skjern Å salmon which has previously been close to extinction. The otter has returned, and in Skjern Enge there are numerous breeding species of water. The area also comprises many historical traces from life in the river valley.
A national park near Skjern Å may create large nature areas and enhance the opportunities of residents to enjoy outdoor activities and experience nature up close.

In addition, the local community is supporting the project, which may help attract more tourists to the area and thus strengthen local development.
